DAY-USE SOAKERS, CALL BEFORE YOU COME FOR AVAILABILITY!

This Is Our Story

Is it the stars or the Steens? Is it the distance from town or the old dirt road?

Maybe it’s the flash from the past or the wide-open space. At Alvord Hot Springs, we feel it’s a combination of all of these things that makes us unique. When you visit this family-owned hot springs, we do our best to make you feel like you’re apart of our family and the traditions we thrive to maintain.

Alvord Hot Springs is privately owned by the Davis family. We host twin concrete pools dating back to the 1940s, but modernized over the years. The hot springs have on-site caretakers, a small store/reception center, restrooms, bunkhouses and campsites.

The pools are near the East base of the Steens Mountains, one mile below the summit at the edge of the Alvord Desert. The water comes out of the ground at 170 degrees and cools when mixed with the soaking pools. Overnight guests can use the pool at any hour, while day-use visitors are welcome during normal business hours.

Our main goal at Alvord Hot Springs is to keep a modest profile while still being able to provide impeccable services. Whether it’s the stars, the soak, the open space, or the seemingly unpopulated area that guests come here for, we aim to facilitate unmatched & authentic experiences .

We always appreciate phone calls and we love word of mouth, as opposed to advertisements and billboard signs. We know change is inevitable, but we strive to maintain some old ways. We like people to enjoy themselves without all of today’s technological advances. We attempt to provide that low key, get-out-of-town feel where guests can feel safe and at one with the awe-spiring land we fell in love with.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the weather like?

The Alvord Desert can have variable weather conditions that are hard to predict from day-to-day. Please feel free to check the closest weather forecast here:

Also, take a look at our aerials HERE and our live cameras HERE.

Can I have a campfire?

Our bunkhouses and most of our campsites have fire rings. We also have firewood for sale at our General Store. Please check here for fire restrictions: https://www.blm.gov/orwafire

Can I camp on the lake bed/desert?

Yes! We have a private desert road leading out to the lake bed, allowing our guests to come and go as they please.  We ask that you check in at Alvord Hot Springs for the gate code and information on how to camp safely on the lake bed without disturbing the fragile environment.

*Weather conditions may prevent camping on the lake bed.

Can I drive on the lake bed/desert?

Driving on the dry lake bed is a popular activity in the Alvord Desert. Guests are advised to avoid the hot spring creek drainage and other wet areas as it is easy to get stuck in the mud.

Are there hiking trails nearby?

Pike Creek Trail is just 2 miles from the Alvord Hot Springs. Guests wanting to drive up to the trailhead must check in at the office for a Wilderness Day Pass. The hike is 5.6 miles out and back and winds up into a box canyon along a small creek, with panoramic views of the mountains and desert.

Where is the nearest gas/groceries?

Burns, Oregon is the closest full-service town to the Alvord Desert. Visitors are advised to fill up on gas and supplies.
